I've been asked to recommend a very good digital camera that can also be used to take video. It doesn't have to be the best camera with a lot of manual settings....as I don't believe the end-user is all that interested in complexity. The 2 cameras that come to my mind are:

Canon PowerShot S2 IS

Sony DSC-M1

I'm open to any suggestions. It's for my father-in-law. I'm thinking the Canon might be easier for him to handle because it is built like a "regular" camera. I've heard the Sony is a bit awkward to handle due to the buttons layout/configuration...and because it is so small and light.

I don't think you can do better for video than the S2. Have him get a large memory card as it doesn't have MPEG4 and uses around 2Mb/sec. But it is the only camera out there that you can use the 12X optical zoom with mechanical stabilization for movies. With stereo sound no less.
