From my brief research, the only major difference between the two is the LCD size (2.0 on the istDS vs 2.5) and the number of AF points (11 on the istDS vs 3)... and truthfully, I'm not even sure that's correct. I've had a hard time finding a side by side comparison. Anyone have any suggestions or preferences, or can point out some of the major differences (or even point me in the right direction). Anything would be appreciated.

The *ist DS uses a PentaPrism, whereas the *ist DL uses a PentaMirror. The Prism results in a much brighter viewfinder.

I agree 100% with Jay... The real difference is the viewfinder. The viewfinder on the DS is much, much better.
