I have less than 7 weeks before my first child is born. This is a moment I can't be without video or pictures. Because having multiple devices is both expensive and impractical, I have decided that I would like to converge both video camera function and digital still camera into one camera.

Here's my current situation. I have a Hi-8 video camera and a Sony DSC-P10. Both work fairly well for what they do, but don't excel at what they do. Since you only get one chance to take "that special picture", in my opinion it has to be with a camera that spares no quality in taking that picture or capturing that moment.

What I want:

8mp camera with image stabilization (video and camera mode preferably)

Decent optical zoom (3x or better)

Small and compact

At least 16mb of onboard memory

PictBridge USB

Video at 640x480 @ 30fps

Macro distance as low as 5cm

Some manual controls

Minimum ISO400

Long battery life

Still picture taking while in video mode

What I don't want:

Compressionless video

Large body

Noisy operation

Fast load time

Fast operation between pictures

At this point, the camera I'm most leaning towards, since it has many if not all of the features I'm looking for is the Samsung DigiMax v800. While I haven't been able to find a review of this camera since it hasn't been released yet, I am still liking the features of this camera.

Two other cameras I'm considering are:

Nikon Coolpix P1

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1S

If you have some pointers or other suggestions, please let me hear them.

Look's like we both are after the same thing. I posted a few day's back regarding a similar request. I need a camera which is also good for video and stills.

I am considering the Nikon 7900 which has 30fps @ 640x480 and after downloading some example video's taken by the camera i am 100% convinced of the quality. It wont match a 3CCD DV Cam by any means but it does enough for my liking.

I think for video recording the Nikon range seem's to be the best...
