I presently own a Nikon D50 which I use and love very much. My wife is looking for the best possible all-around digital point-n-shoot camera that will produce excellent / consistent indoor results of people pics without the need for post-processing.

I've had good results with Olympus (C-5050, C-7070WZ) but some really poor results with Nikon (CP5000, CP7900).

What would you recommend? She wants something with a hot shoe to add a small external flash for better red-eye reduction.

I have a Panasonic FZ20 with a Sunpak 383 external flash that I like a lot. If money is not a gating item, one possible alternative (that might not require flash as often) would be the Fuji S9000 (ISO up to 1600 instead of only 400). It also has a hot-shoe, it's got 9 M-pixels instead of 5, but it will run you about $700 instead of $400. If money is REALLY no object, the Sony DSC-R1 looks totally kick-ass (Big imager, ISO up to 3200, 10 M-pixels, and of course external flash support) atjust under$1000. FWIW

I also recommend the FZ-20...if she wants something smaller, the Canon G6 or Sony V3 are top of the line cams

Why not save a ton of money? Purchase the Olympus C-5000. It has a hot shoe, 5mp, 3X optical zoom and when using the Olympus FL-20 Flash can take great digital photos out to 25 feet.

By the way there is a rummor that the reason that Nikon discontinued the 8400 and 8700 moels is that they will be coming out with a 10.3mp model based on the new Sony CMOS imager used in the Sony R-1, that tclune mentioned above.
