In my opinion, the S2 is my first choice and is more suited to what I want , and not necessarily what I need. The FZ5 is less geared toward what I want, but I figure it will not disappoint me at all if I buy it for what I need. I look at it as the base model that satisfies all my needs without as many creature comforts like better video, a movable lcd, etc...

Pretty much the decision is coming down to the $100-$150 I will save by buying the FZ5.

So do you guys think I should wait for the S2 to come down in price, or would the FZ5 be the way to go?

Also, I've considered the HC1 and was impressed, but in the end decided the above 2 would suit me best.

They are both decent cameras. If you care about the video mode, I'd wait for the S2 IS to come into my price range. Otherwise, you'll probably not be disappointed with the FZ5, and will most likely come to feel that you haven't "settled for second best." Also, realize that the FZ5 will also likely come down in price over time, so if you'e in no hurry to buy you can probably save a few bucks by waiting anyway. (But then there will be a whole new crop of slightly better cameras that are just out of your reach...)

I dont think the S2 will come down in price anytime soon, not until they anounce a newer model which wont be until the spring cycle. So if you can wait that long. But like computers, there will always be something better or cheaper downt the road. One rule that is true with pretty much all electronics.

Figure our what is the most you can absolutely spend, and get the best camera you can get with that amount of money.

Dont skimp on 100 now and curse yourself if you want to take a video down the road. Sure you dont neeeeeeeed it, but then who needs half the crap we buy. Skimp on some dinner dates. pass up two of those and there is your 150.

I'm really curious as to where you reside, and what is yourcost for the S2. I live in Canada, had an A95, (great camera) but when I saw the 12x tele. and the IS I just had to have it.

Sold the A95 to my daughter for 1/2 what I paid for it, and paid $630 CDN for the S2. I also purchased the tele. & WA to go with it along with a 512 meg card, and the Power Adapter so I can sit in my easy chair and play around with the menu etc. With the A95 I bought the Canon Charger with 4 2300 mah batteries along with a spare set of 4 that I keep charged up in case.

I am a retiree (+70) and figure I'm worth it, it's been so much fun. Don't think I have an unlimited supply of $$$$, because we live from cheque to cheque, but when you gotta have it you gotta have it. Bite the bullet and go for the one you want NOW!
