After reading many reviews, I find myself more confused about which DSLR to get :?. I think I have narrowed it down between the Nikon D70s and the Canon EOS 30D. I was hoping someone here would have some helpful input about which one is better overall. I am interested in improving my photography skills and hopefully taking some "professional" quality photographs ofmy children.

I prefer to make a purchase that will serve me for several years so that I don't need to invest in upgrades.

I would also appreciate any feedback about types of lenses and which you would recommend as a primary and secondary.

Thanks :-)

The two camera are great and your skill will probably limit them. Your budget would probably dictate what to get. Honestly, I'll get the D70s and spend the money on better lens. Nikon has an 18-70 lens that's a decent walk-around lens and could be had for about $200 when packaged with the D70s body. Canon's comparable focal range is the 17-85 IS USM which cost $500. It is a better lens, but it cost more.

For a secondary lens, I'd suggest a 70-300 or a 55-200. In either case, you should get the 50mm 1.8 prime for indoor lens (in this case Canon's can be had for $70 while Nikon's cost $100).

Also, for the price of 30D and a cheapo 18-55 kit lens, you can get the D70s and Nikon's 18-200 VR lens! The VR lens is new (and great) and is hard to find.
