OK, this is a real bird witha red crest. Taken a couple of weeks ago - I usually find them higher up in trees but this woody was only a few feet off the ground and was just hammering away at this tree and the chips were flying.

After making the hole big enough, it stuck it's beak in there and started rooting around for grubs - larvae from wood boring insects.
