These two male Pheasants calmly walked out of the underbrush then suddenly turned on each other, scrambled around few about 20 seconds and then went right back to being best friends. It was quite comical to watch.

Hey smac, great pictures! you seem to have quite a bit of experience with birds. I was out hiking one day and this (what I think is a ruffed grouse) started stalking me. I stopped and it slowly made its way up it me, it was a little hesitant at first but it let me pic it up. I've read somewhere online since then that in mating season they can be attracted to any kind of thumping sound (footsteps, small engines, etc.) Have you ever come across anything like this?

Here's another, I not 100% sure its a ruffed grouse. But the area I was in is exactly what its habitat is described as.

I think your absolutely right. That looks like a Ruffed Grouse to me as well. I am a little too far south for this fellow so I don't have any experience with this bird, but how cool is it that you could actually pick it up. A real DR. Dolittle moment. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Cheers,
Steve
