I took this today...I have never seen one before, and I can't find my bird books....he had a funny walk...he kind of bounced with each step, and he (she?) is about as big as a fat dove....What the heck is it?

It looks to me like an American Woodcock. There's more information here:

Thanks, Dan, I think you are right on.....I saw something out of the corner of my eye as I was driving home on a country road, so I backed up, and this fellow was sitting there. When I opened the door, he flew off. I went back today and he was still there, but this time I had my window open and was able to take this shot. He/she is only about 8 feet from the road, in the grass just before the woods. I should take my video camera, he had a funny walk.....:-)

Definitely an American woodcock. Nice shot. Keep tabs on himas the mating ritual is really interesting. In evening they fly straight up and spiral around.

Thanks, Dennis. I hope I do see this fella again. But I doubt it. I saw him there two days in a row, but he has not been there for a few days.....
I have lived here all of my life, and this is the first time I have ever seen this bird. I doubt I will ever see another. I feel very lucky to have been able to get the few shots I took.

Nice shot of an unusual bird. I have not run across one of these yet. I'm definitely going to put it on my list.
