For those interested here is the male Merganser with his hood down compared to the hood up version.

I guess he lost interest in impressing his girlfriend and is taking a break.

Interesting they show off for the girls kind of like wild turkeys do around here. You did gooood.

they also "slick down" their feathers just before they dive. i have several shots of them with their crests athalf mast or less... they are definitely interesting birds!

Ahhhh. Retractable hood. Interesting method of attracting a mate. I would imagine that when they fly, the hood is down for aerodynamics?

Hung, the hood seems to stay up when they fly a short distance, but I expect on a long flight it would be folded down.
