this kingfisher dove for a fish while i was prowling around the edge of a marsh. i missed the dive, but got this shot a second or two later. apparently he'd dropped his fish, and had to go back in after it... at least i'm guessing that's what all these mid-air gymnastics were for. i can barely tell which end is which, but it's a safe bet the pointy bits are headed back after "the one that got away"... 30D, Sigma @ 400mm, 1/800 @ f7.1...

Kind of strange looking but a great stop action shot.

thanks! i'd have loved to catch him on the initial dive, and coming back up with his lunch, but i was pointing the wrong way, and barely got the camera on him in time for this one... i do like the open beak, though... :G

Kingfishers are very fast and small.
