Awesome shot! I love mallards. I have been trying to capture a shot like this but they usually turn out with wings blurred or in the wrong position.... from what I was wanting anyway.....

Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful detail of the feathers inside of the wing. Well done, Don

Overkill: The secret to these types of capturesis to wait until the mallard (either sex) just dips it's head in the water very quickly (not to be confused with dunking for food). I have found that this is the signal that its about to do the wing flapping routine. Once you observe this behaviour it becomes easier to prepare yourself for the shot. Nowyou knowthe secret. :-) Here's a female that flapped for me right on cue. (Notintended to detract from Don's excellent shot).

Hope this helps. Cheers, Dan

Thanks everyone. He was definitely a bit of a show boat.

Nice shot Dan! I love it when they spread their wings showing off. ....Don

Thats a very regal pose on that mallard. I like it! Nice sharpness and details on the feathers. Good work Don.
