Natures Clown = Funny Vultures

I used to think chipmunks or squirrels were natures clowns but I am changing my mind. I normally try to get above the cliffs in position before the Vultures come up out of the canyon for some sun before they take off for a days hunting. I get a few photos and back out slowly so as not to scare them. This time I decided to wait until they flew away before I left.

They do get themselves in some real strange positions while enjoying the sun. I was watching thru my 500mm lens and it was very difficult not to just bust out laughing.

The only thing I could think of was a athlete stretching his muscles before an event.

Makes perfectly good sense to me - especially if they're older birds. Good shots, Roger. Cheers, Dan

another great series - am i right in thinking the sun has some sort of calorific value, a bit like solar heating i guess!

Your guess is correct - Turkey Vultures do use the early morning sun to warm up -- a form of thermoregulation. Roger's good pictures (here and elsewhere) are good illustrations of the appropriate poses. They (and storks) are also known to poop on their own feet in hot weather to let the evaporation cool the blood in their feet and thus lower their body temperature. Yet another use for the UV rays of the sun for sterilization!
