Yesterday afternoon, I was also happy to spot a few black skimmers. They fly so gracefully while skimming the water for food. I wonder if they ever catch their lower beak on kelp or a sunken branch and crash. Their beaks are so odd fitting that they kinda look fake.

(All shots taken with a canon 20d, canon 400mm f5.6. Post processing with photoshop CS2 and neat image. Exif data intact.)

3) They have quite wide wingspans. In the distance, they have the shape of long black bommerangs.

4) I really did not want to leave without a good shot of a black skimmer doing it's thing. Next time I'll try for a closer shot with it coming at me instead of away.

Good shots and a good question, too. Being largely nocturnal foragers, they do sometimes strike submerged objects, but they never crash -- the jaw joint is modified so thatthe lower jawbecomes "unhinged" and moves freely so nothing is damaged when a solid object is struck. No sprain, no pain, to turn a phrase. These birds nest at Bolsa Chica along with the terns, so it is a good place to catch them foraging in daylight, which they have to do when they are feeding young.
