Neither of these is a pure wild type, Hung (also note the scattering of white feathers and lack of the white neck ring in the drake). Therehas beenso much interbreeding with the white domestic ducks (Pekinsare a domestic variety of Mallards) that are dumped in the city parks that there are very few pure Mallards left around the urban areas in Southern California. There are lots of what I call "Mostly Mallards" in and around Newport Bay and Bolsa Chica, one of which is probably where you took these.

Good pictures, but not good examples of the species!

mallards aren't picky - they'llmate with anything that even looks like a duck... :O this one is, perhaps, a bit truer to breed...
