Anyone who is sharp enough to identify sparrows certainly can tell sexes of Avocets, so I assume you know you got one of each (male above) -- maybean upsetpair with a nest or young nearby?

how do you tell the sex of these avocets. i looked at them back and forth and don't see a difference.

Actually the chicks were on the other side of the pond. I couldn't get close because the land is owned by the Calgary Airport Authority and there are no trespassing signs posted. I was surprised they would fly a good 200 meters or more to try to chase me off.
