Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel

For all my life (65 years old in October) I have called these little guys chipmunks. After posting some photos of them I find out they are Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels. A little to fancy of a name for me so I will call them Roger Chipmunks.

Here he is having a little lunch

I use my crow call very softly to try and get him to turn around. Now he is looking for the crow

No crow so I might a well finish lunch

Great pictures of a cute little critter.
Hey, don't feel too bad, the two little rodents look almost identical. Just remember the G-M ground squirrel dosen't have the black stripes on it's head. Only Chipmunks have the head stripes. To be honest, I don't think too many people will give you grief if you mis-name a little critter as cute as these.
Nice job Roger,

Steve

Well, a squirrel by any other name is still a great photo. :blah:

I wonder who nipped the little fella's ear?

That's because they are! In Alabama all you have is one chipmunk.

Here in the West we have 22 species of chipmunk (lots of luck telling tham apart) :angry:and 25 of ground squirrels.

Nice job Roger,

Steve
Hi Steve, I probably should read a book or two but I won't cuz I rather be out in the woods than home reading. Thanks for the kind comment and for taking the time to look.

I was wondering the same thing about his ear. I have no idea. Thanks Penolta for the nice comment and for looking.
