This is a very nice photo of an immature Laughing Gull. What impresses me most is the balanced lighting - only the highlights on the white rump are blown. Was there reflected lighting from the water below, or is it photoshop magic? Great DOF too.

Penolta....
Thanks for the compliment on the shot...The "blown" white area is because of the
blazing sun...I was pleased that the whole shot wasn't ruined...This was taken with a Canon 20D....Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens with a 1.4 converter...I was on a pier higher than the gulls, thus the blue back ground is actually the ocean...I was pleased with
the DOF as well...It lets the gull stand out in the shot...Thanks for the gull ID as well...I am used to seeing the mature laughing gulls and know the difference between them and the regular gulls...We usually find the atlantic gulls in the
McDonalds parking lot begging french fries...O wait, those aren't atlantic gulls, they are "parking lot" gulls...

great bif gull shot. nice details on the wing feathers. the blown out highlights are minor and do not bother me since the majority of the gull was well exposed. tough to do in harsh bright light. my only suggestion is an off center crop to improve the framing.

Very nice shot of the Gull, John. I alsolike the hue of the Ocean in the background.

The blown white is minor....I usually blow more than that.:-)
