A beautiful late fall day...sunny with temps around 60....made for a wonderful day on Lake Degray in Southwest Arkansas, but it wasn't necessarily the best time to go out with an eagle watch program because the birds were enjoying the warm day and spent the time soaring high on the warm air currents. Still, we did get to see some eagle, including a pair of mature bald eagles engaged in a dispute over territory.

The eagle most inclined to cooperate with my camera was an immature bald eagle, who nicely aligned his body for best light.

One of the reasons Degray has become a favorite as a wintering spot for the bald eagles coming south from Minnesota is the large number of American coots who make the same trip. The coots become the primary prey of the bald eagles. Without question, the most frantic part of the day came when our party barge motored into a cove in which there was a flock of a couple of hundredcoots. The strange way these birds have to build up momentum by literally running over the surface of the water produced a maelstorm on the surface as dozens tried to take off at once.

Even if we didn't get as close to eagles as we had hoped, the day was definitely a success.....doesn't get much better than cruising a lake on one of the last sunny Saturdays of the season. And there were other birds, including this great blue heron who decided to make a fly-by on our party barge.
