The sun came out for a couple of hours so I raced to a local park and got in a few shots. I had a chance to shoot at different apertures to experiment as well. Unfortunately I'm not using my computer to process the pictures so I don't really know how good or bad they are!

Thanks for looking - feedback and tips are greatly appreciated.

Cheers :-)

Jim

Your exposure looks good and image #2 works nice for me! Merry X-mas!

Jim, you have some excellent exposure on the black caps on these and some decent exposure in most of the cheeks, which is a feat in and of itself with this bird. I like your first 2 poses because of the super isolation and nice composition. I also like the "blue" hued background in the last shot as it really draws out contrast. Sharpness seems reasonable to me. I'm not sure how much of a crop you did on these but if you really wish to pick up dynamic detail in this bird you need to probably use a tube with the 500 or have an extremely stable tripod and flawless technique (it appears to me that your technique for that huge lens is pretty fine even now). If you wish to get more detail than this you might consider playing with some tubes. They can make a huge difference with close shooting on the super telephotos.

These are some of the best chickadee shots I've seen lately, so you are definitely on the right track. These birds can become addictive to shoot because of the huge task of picking up contrast and detail as well as sharpness because of their never ending movement.

Well done!

Thanks everyone. I hope to find some different subjects soon - but these Chickadees have been a good start with the new lens.

Merry Christmas.

Here is the original of the first shot - I was pretty close so I set the aperture to 7.1 to keep it sharp.

Looks like you're getting off to a great start with that lens!
