I was practicing with the 500 and extender when this Pileated woodpecker showed up. The lighting wasn't great but at least the bird was cooperative.

Thanks for looking.

Jim

You were in the right place at the right time with the right equipment, and it all came together. Luck and skill combined. An unanticipated benefit of practice!

The only thing that would have been better would have been if it had big white patches on the wings! :G

Good one Jim - and bonus points for #3!! Nice to see a different perspective of that bird. Cheers, Dan

Great catch and a nice job with the opportunity, Jim! Really like the spread wings shot.

Haha about the white patches. :G

Great shots of a difficult Woodpecker and I like how you can see the feather detail in #1 and #3....I can never get the detail in black birds.

Always a huge congratulations when someone manages a fine photograph of this bird, Jim, you have done an excellent job here. I really like the first one and the way the trunks surround the bird, creating some very cool effects. That slight wing flap is great as well.

Wonderful shots! I envy you this opportunity. I've had a pair of pileateds that I've spotted at a distance in the woods around my house recently, but I've never gotten close enough for a decent shot. They're beautiful birds and you've more than done them justice.
