Hi All,

We were giving bread to some sparrows when this guy shot on the scene like a bullet. He was gone when i got my D300 out and ready.

After 2 minutes and he flew back into our view for a brief moment.

This image is approx an 1/9 cropof the original image.

Do you know the name of this bird? And a bit of background info?

Thank you,

Nicholas

It is a male Red-bellied Woodpecker, abundant in the southeast. There have been several posts of these lately some in the Pentax forum, I think. Only the nape of the neck is red in the female, and extends over the top of the head in the male. Like other woodpeckers, they are cavity nesters. These woodpeckers drum to mark their territories and attract mates - as I remember, in Florida where Palm trees abound in urban areas, they would use these for nesting as they were soft and easy to excavate, but used telephone poles and sometimes even the galvanized drainpipes on buildings, which resonate loudly, for this purpose.

Thank you Penolta for the I.D. and the lesson.

This was shot today in New York City.

Perhaps his being here indicates a mild second half of winter for New York?

Thank you,

Nicholas
