The Downy Woodpecker was hand held, but the Squirrel was with a mono-pod. The lens is just a bit too heavy to reliably hand hold every shot, so I have gone to a mono-pod I have had for a few years called a Camcane.

It has a rubber cup on the camera lens and a round ball on the mono-pod so it is fast to use and it seems to steady the camera/lens fairly well.

looks like the lens is working out great for you tom. what type of indoor sports do you shoot btw? have you tried using a tc with this lens?
