I bought my 500 last November and usually used an extender with it. Today I wanted to see what it could do on its own. These are straight from the camera - only cropping.

Pikas are always winners - very high cuteness factors. That last GMGSquirrel shot is a killer. Great stuff, Jim.

Your bird is a thrush, most probably a Hermit Thrush (a side or back view would help to confirm, but I think that is a good bet, since western races are paler than those in the East).

Beautiful photos, Jim, I'd say that you should definitely use that 500 without extender more often, it really shows off the lenses abilities for super background!
