Default Anybody know what this is?

This was on my porch roof last night. I thought it was a fiddler crab but I don't think they climb this high.

Looks like something you would get if you crossed a frog with a crab! I don't recall ever seeing anything like that either. Hmmm.........????

Damn, I replied to this but its gone.

Yes, I believe it is a fiddler crab. I could tell better with more of the left claw showing. But the body shape and leg layout is right.

Althought I have vacationed in my youth on the beach many times (and see many fiddler crabs) I had to look up some pictures in google images before I was really confident.

Amazingly enough, there is a web site devoted to fiddler crabs, I got an email address from it and sent the picture to a professor at Arizona State. He said that it definately was not a fiddler crab.

I then sent it to a friend who's daughter is a biologist (should have thought of that first) and she said that it's a Mangrove Tree Crab. They apparentely live near the water but would rather stay in the trees or other higher places. She said they are commom here in Florida but I've lived here for 30 years and have mangroves coming up to my back yard and it's the first one I've seen.

OK kids, class dismissed.

Very interesting. So the fiddler has a relative!

Learn something new every day.
