Fighting Osprey (OspreyLand) Long Thread
03-29-09 Fighting Osprey Pa vs The Stranger A very interesting afternoon for me. Now I am sure this is how Pa got hurt, there is another male Osprey trying to take over the nest. Ma & Pa were sitting in the nest when this other male showed up and started circling the nest. Ma left and Pa got pretty up-set. Most of the time was spent with them circling each other and yelling at each other, then one or the other would go to the nest and when that happened the one on the nest would do one of three things when he was attacked.

1. Duck, you can see dust flying off the nest cuz they duck down so fast and hard.

2. Fly off when the attacking Osprey was getting close and they were not in position to defend the nest.

3. Try to defend the nest. The screaming was was very loud and different from any other sounds I have heard them make. Also very different that when they were yelling at each other while circling around.

The whole time they were watching each other and not really paying attention to anything else but each other. They also kept their talons at the ready. From the start to the finish was probably 1/2 hour or so. The actual fights were just a instant, no time to get ready. I had to anticipate cuz there is no time to get ready. I left when it was to dark to see. Pa was in a tree and about 200 yards away the other male was in another tree and the nest was empty. Ma was in a tree about 300 yards away. Bad luck for me was I was to close to capture everything but I did get a few that shows the fighting story. 1. Pa letting the stranger know he is ready to defend his nest.

Pa leaving to meet the attacker

3. They circled around and worked their way about 300 yards from the nest. Pa then came back to the nest.

4.Pa didn't have a chance to even turn around and the stranger was on the attack. Pa ducked down real fast and hard.

5.You can see the dust from when Pa ducked down

6.
Pa is trying to spot the attacker. The stranger is behind Pa at this time.

7.
The stranger was screaming as he attacked again and pop barely had time to turn and duck again.

8.
Pa is off to chase down the stranger

9.
The stranger is watching Pa as he comes in to claim the nest.

10.
The strange didn't have time to get in defensive mode so he left. Pa was behind him in attack mode.

11.
Pa is re-claiming his nest.

12.
This time Pa had time to turn around and defend his nest.

13.
The stranger didn't turn away this time and Pa went up to meet him.

14.
The fight continues.

15.
Time to re-group.

16.
After a fast short circle they meet right above the nest.

17.
Pa was able to turn the stranger back.

1
18.

19.
The stranger turned at came back at Pa, but this time he pulled up and flew over to a tree about 200 yards away. Pa stayed in the nest about 10 minutes then he flew over to a tree not far from the nest but higher up on the ridge.

It got to dark to see so I came home. I plan on going down to see if there is a final winner today or tomorrow. Wacky roger

Fantastic series of photos. I especially love the aerial acrobatics between the two.

Amazing series Roger!! :| Thank you so much for posting these. It's very educational to witness these interactions between the ospreys - I had no idea that they were so combative amongst themselves.Great job. Cheers, Dan
