I was quite lucky to get these 2 not so great shots of a Ruby Crown in a rather agitated state. Their red cap shows when they're upset. This little guy was having a scrap with another male, and they were chasing each other around at break neck speed. He sat for a few seconds and I was lucky to get a couple of shots. Then he tore off after the other male again. Man, they sure can move!

Nice capture with the crest up Don! I guess it's that time of year when males challenge each other. I saw a real dogfight the other day between two red wing blackbirds - man they were all over the place !! Cheers, Dan

Great catch - those red feathers are usually hidden when they are not being "used" - I don't think I've ever seen them that well. :O

wow... i have never seen one do that? he must've been scared stiff or something... i've seen a few of them with the red visible as a dull stripe on top of their heads, but i never knew they could raise it like that! great catch, Don... right place, right time, right gear... well done!

Present only in the male, in this case it is used as a threat display, intended to intimidate another male in defense of his territory. It could also be used in courtship, when it would be attractive to a female. As you say, right place, right time. And quick response on Don's part, too!

I didn't know there was that much red on the crown either, nice capture of something I have never seen before.

Thanks Squirl. Yes, that's how they got their name I guess. This one was chasing another one around. Quite a sight to see, when the cap popped up....cheers...Don
