Default Black Vultures (and a snack)

Was out testing a new (actually very old & used) lens - Pentax A* 300 - and took some test shots of our park's very active Black Vulture population.

First noticed a large group all perched in one tree near the roadside - and not very anxious to leave the area.

Most were looking down, just this one watching the sky...

(Do you prefer the full photo, or the cropped image?)

Down on the ground, more were engaged in some "interesting" conversations and conflicts:

And the reason for this gathering? Just one young raccoon!

Hope you enjoyed this little glimpse of some of our park's fine scavengers. Glad for any comments/critique!

Great photo op for a seldom photographed bird. The pose in #1 is classic. Thanks for posting these.

Default Mole strikes again!

Another wonderful series, mole. Getting detail on black birds is a real trick and you did very well!

I don't know why but, every time I see images of vultures, I'm put in mind of this old Far Side cartoon

Mole, That is a great series. You got some great detail. For some reason I really like vultures. One of our favorite places to go for a short hike/photo ops is Long Hunter State Park near Nashville. There are over 300 that hang out here during the winter. It is fun to watch them interact with each other.

Which park do you work?
