Good job T, Really enjoyed these.

Bernice, I can't answer for Torgny but, I think he forgot to answer your question so, in the spirit of helping out a fellow photographer, I'll take a stab at it.
I'd have to guess that he used a process like the "shadow/highlight" option in photo shop, to lighten the darker area of the photo.
And yes, it was due to the bright background.
