Default Sandhill Cranes

I took these photos at Kent Lake, just to the west of Detroit, MI. This first photo is of the papa who appeared to be standing watch. The second photo is of mama with her two ckicks. These birds were very approachable and were in fine shape for the migration. I used my Tamron for this shoot.

Nice crane family. Anyone know why the chicks are refered to as "colts"? I did a quick search once but didn't find anything. I've never gotten as close as you have. Were they in a populated area?

The photos were taken in a park. I was inside of ten feet away from the cranes when I took the shots.
