Default red bellied wood pecker

red bellied wood pecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

a fairly common type of woodpecker they are often times confused with the red headed wood pecker since the majority of the red plumage on these birds is on their heads. Red headed woodpeckers are however a different birds.

male, if you look closely you will see he does indeed have red on his belly

please note when I first posted image 1 and 2 were the same (doh!) I have since updated the second image to be the correct second shot of the male red bellied woodpecker.
