This was my first outing with my new Nikon 70-300. Really liking the sharpness and contrast. The Painted Bunting (different thread) was my last outing with the 55-200 that this lens replaces.

Didn't think of a Green Heron, because, well it's not green. Plus I usually think of Herons as much larger. That is what lead me to the Bittern as a related family with the "Least" closest in color. However, looking at the Green Heron, that magenta belly definately separates it.

Agree, definitely a Green Heron. They are interesting birds, and the one in the photo appears fully grown. They are much smaller birds than some of the other Heron species.
