Default Forster's Tern in flight

'Nice pictures of a Caspian Tern. Forster's is less robust, has a smaller bill and a forked tail.

Actually, my avatar is an Elegant Tern, not a Caspian.

You can't tell size or behavior from a photograph, but the Caspian in our largest tern, the size of a gull. It is also bulkier, not slender like all the other terns. The Elegant has a longer, more slender bill; the Caspian bill is thicker and has a black tip - study its wing beats and compare them to other terns as it has a very different flight pattern.

There are nine species of terns that occur regularly in California, plus a few other rarities, so you have to be pretty careful.
