Default Western Grebe and Eared Grebe

This pictures were taken at Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline. The Western Grebe is very difficult to differentiate from Clark's Grebe. On the other hand, same goes to differentiate Eared Grebe from Horned Grebe in their Winter plumage. I hope I get the names right.

Yep, it's a Western grebe. Nicely captured. The black hood extends down below the eye in the Western and the Clark's black hood ends just at or above the eye.
Cheers,
Steve

Also the bill in the Western is yellow-green and the bill in Clark's is orange.

Steve's facial description also applies to the Eared and Horned Grebes in Winter plumage. This one is Eared. Except for one (unless I missed seeing any others), all of these Grebes you have posted recently are Eared.

Alll good pictures.
