Default White-tailed kite

This little beauty was perched in a tree right next to the parking lot of the Colusa Nation Wildlife Refuge today. Usually, they are very skittish, but this one sat for about 10 minutes while I snapped away.

Thanks very much. I believe you folks down under call them Black-shouldered kites if I'm not mistaken. Here in Northern California, that's what I grew up calling them. They look identical to each other to me. So, I am not sure what the difference is. They are both beautiful birds.
Some around here refer to them as Angel birds because of their tendency to hover, stationary, above the ground while hunting.
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks. Yeah, the eyes are a show stopper for sure. Maybe you will see this guy when you come up. Last year there were a pair that hung out in the same trees right next to the parking lot. Your 150-500mm would reach them.

Cheers,
Steve

Black Shouldered Kite is indeed the name down under
I regularly see one in my local wetlands but lack the skill and the patience to get a good shot of it.

They are definitely a very skittish bird. It's taken me a long time to get close enough for a decent shot and I still want to be closer. I guess that's what keeps us coming back.

Cheers
