What fantastic shots you have posted. Both are great but that first one is special. Really like the light.

How did you light him up?

I guesses you noticed the catchlights

They were both filled-in by one single on camera mounted external battery powered speedlight (Nikon SB-900 and Canon 580EX), set at -1EV...

That first one is special.
I do like the backlit highlights on the second one though.

I'm wondering how you decide what camera to take?
