Default a "gray ghost"

the male northern harrier, also known as "the gray ghost", is much less often seen than the female... i've been told that females outnumber the male by as much as 4:1 in the general population, and that one male may service 3 or 4 nests during nesting season, which would make for some very busy boys! just providing food alone would be an all-day proposition! but they're lovely birds, and it's really fun to watch them hunt...

i sure am, Mike! i love it, and with the 7DII it's a helluva wildlife combo!! the harrier was moving... they don't really hover; when the spot prey, they just sort of put out the flaps and drop. this one was just gliding by about 10 feet off the ground, looking for lunch...

Beautiful shots, the first one really shows the aerodynamics of this bird. We have a couple of these hawks that live nearby and I've seen one take a sitting pigeon right off of a tree branch.
