I returned to the Avocet location this evening and was pleased to see a number of younger ones. It appears that I was remembered as a non-threat as they kept going about their business, allowing me to photograph them from an acceptable distance. It was an overcast evening but the sun began to peek out just enough to help create some lighting on the water.

absolutely spectacular pose! the picture does look "overcast" though...

nice shot

would pumping up the contrast a bit and maybe brightening it a smidgeon help the "overcastness"?

That is a very pretty bird, I don't think we have them around here.... at least, if we do, I've never seen them. Nice shot!

I took your advice, Vito, and it looks a bit better. Thanks for the suggestion. Guitarman, I've been fortunate to have a pond nearby where a number of them are nesting.

Thanks zoomn, it was one second in my life and one second in the bird's life, and I just happened to have my camera focused on this wonderful looking bird when it happened, and I think the bird knew it, so it "flashed" a kindness to me, and my finger just happened to acknowledge it. I have no idea how but I have no arguments, since this wing expanse sort of shot has happened only a few times so far. Thanks for your comment.

I thank you for appreciating the photo. I can guarantee to you that I thank the bird for showing me it's beauty.
