This one I offer just as I took it.... (size and quality reduced).

Taken at first light this morning on the Uncompaghre Plateau of western Colorado at about 8500 ft. elevation. The peaks in the background are the LaSalle Mountains of Utah.

Nice shot, Hummer. You got him in a great pose, with good lighting effects, and the mountainous backdrop to boot!

What focal length were you shooting at? (ie: how far were you from him...)

I can only guess now, but probably about 65 feet (~21m). It was shot at ISO 50, F2.8, 1/60th, 12x magnification, hand held with Panasonic FZ10. Isn't he a beauty? He was with two other Mule Deer bucks, moving away as I drove by. This is good country for deer and elk. The shrubs from right to left are Gambel oak, big sage, and snowberry....

Only a few minutes before I photographed a herd of about 100 elk. It is incredibly big, beautiful country. Today I found bear sign everywhere, tracks, steaming scat, and a warm bear bed just vacated....oh my!

Handheld at 12x magnification? Pretty darn good!

65 feet is pretty close proximity. You had an advantage in that you were in your vehicle. When I used to go into the mountains in Montana I never could get close enough to the mulies to bag one, let alone take a decent picture of one.

Sounds like great country for a wilderness experience. One of these years I'll have to get out there. As for the bear, at least you don't have grizzlies in Colorado. I remember (somewhat fondly) my many backpacking trips into the Mission Mtns. and Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana where the grizzlies were abundant - it doesn't make for restful nights...

Nice, very nice indeed, to see photographers making the best of light. And, Hummer, you are humming along with this one indeed. Excellent photo!
