I think this one is a young one but, not sure. it stayed well away from and i was pressed for time. i really annoyed the poor bird. he was trying to feed on frogs and it appeared they kept jumping away as he approached them. i was told when their crest feathers are up that it means they are annoyed or alarmed. not sure if this is true. but, he definitely was annoyed at me as he screeched and cackled at me a few times.

when he first noticed me or soon after.

an odd pose. anyone know what he might be doing?

really concentrating on catching a meal.

Nice behavioral shots, Dennis! I love that crest!

I could go along with your determination that this was a juvenile Green Heron (the streaked neck makes me think it so).

thanx all!!!

geoffs, at first when i saw the heron i thought it was a bittern as i saw only the front. when i saw the rest of it then i knew. according to Sibley's and another bird book it looks like it is a first year bird. i think it nests in the area as it flew in front of my truck from the other side of the road and the 2 times it flew awy it flew back to where it appears to have come from. the past 2 days i haven't seen it.
