Is this Grouse? Shot at Palo Alto baylands using 10D and 100-400L. This guys was too close to me in the parkig lot. The min. focussing distance is not much so I was able to take these shots. Almost full-frame, resized for web.

Isn't it fun when they are so close you've got the pleasant problem of having problems with minimum focusing distance?

Anyways, these are pretty nice and what you've got pictured here looks to me to be a female Ring-Necked Pheasant.

Thanks Geoffs, that's what I thought when I posted the shot of the pheasant. I saw this female about an hr before I saw the male but they were hanging around at the same place and looked very much like each other except for colorful male.

Super contrast setting and exposure on the first one (second is good too); the eyeball is magnificently clear. Great strut pose too.
