Nice photos. Seems your hawk mystery is solved but one last note. I agree that it is a sharp shinned. Besides the size difference you can sometimes tell by looking at the tip of the tail. A sharp shinned has a more flattend tip and sometimes slightly notched, as with the bird in the photo. A coopers has a slightly more rounded tip.

smac & joenl - many thanks for the update guys, now I know what kind of hawk visits the backyard - really most interesting discussion and I really learn a lot about birding from you guys - thanks again and very best wishes - Gene

Normcar - thanks for the comments on the white-throated sparrow, they are one of my favorite birds, they are so numerous in my yard this time of year that I've even had some of them try to get into my blind with me in it! - thanks again and take care - Gene
