This is especially for those of you who have little opportunity to see hummingbirds and how very small they are.

Recently I followed up on some tips of hummingbirds wintering in western Colorado. The first bird pictured here is a female Costa's Hummingbird which I captured, banded and released on Dec. 4th. Costa's are common to coastal and desert areas of southern California and Arizona but rare in Colorado. This bird is the first record for western CO and the fourth record for the state. The bird has braved record cold overnight temperatures around 4 F degrees.

Later that same day I found a female Anna's hummer using a feeder at another home nearby. Anna's occupy much the same range as Costa's and are nearly as rare in Colorado. It is the first record of the species in western CO since 1978. Both Anna's and Costa's are in the Calypte genus and it is the first of either species I have seen in Colorado.

Photo was taken with my Panasonic FZ-10 in macro mode. I love this camera!

Nice shots Hummer. I always enjoy watching these guys, particulary male & the female flying around each other.
