It was so cold here today that I just took the car out, found a hedge, and shot sparrows all afternoon. Here are a few:

One

Two

Three

Four

Five (synchronized flying)

Really nice shots Norm. I really like #2, it's just so cute. Almost looks
like it's thinking, "What's this crazy human doing out on a day like
today?" Yesterday must have been a sparrow day! I ran into a group
of white-throated yesterday. Wasn't as close as I would have liked to be
so they needed tight cropping. I'll probably post some anyway.

Normcar these first two are so sharp, like your other shot Blue.

What lens are you using on these? I assume you are using your turbo Canon camera.

Sounds like a good way to spend a couple hours, sitting next to hedge taking shots of these little guys.

I got some shots yesterday of some bald eagles just a tad too far away and some quail w/just a tad of motion blur and another mystery bird just a tad of motion blur. Can't wait to get my tripod, should be here this week. As you know it is really tough to freeze the action handheld in bad light when you are working with 500mm.

Is that snow on the beak of the little guy in #1?

Thanks guys for the kind comments.

Woodmeister, these indeed are cute birds, and I find them to be really colorful as well, each one different in coloration than the other.

Bobby, yes, these birds eat lots of snow and it's fun to try to catch a nose full.

Zoomn, yes, this was the Mark II and the 300/4 non-IS Canon. Great lens and I got it cheap online. No tripod ring but it's light enough that it isn't missed. If I use a monopod I just strap it right to the camera, no problem. I used the window of the car for these shots. That also serves as a good support, especially if the windows are power so you can adjust quickly.

Cheers
