Went out again today determined to get something decent. It wasn't foggy
which helped. Lightened up a little later. Through out the auto exposure
stuff and went manual. Still needed flash though. I think I may be getting the
hang of using this guy. The first shot is the cardinal. This is the third day
in a row I went to this spot and I think they are getting used to my truck
parking there. They are coming closer and showing themselves more.
Here's the male I got. Still in the thickets but getting less shy.

Drebel, 100-400L IS USM

ISO 400, 1/200 sec, f/5.6, 400 mm, manual exposure, 420EX flash
processing ACR -> TIFF -> NeatImage -> 0.5,100% USM -> save for web
(note: without flash @ ISO 1600 ss would only have been 1/60 sec)

And here is the downy woodpecker. Question, is there a quick and dirty
way to soften the edges at a high contrast like this, or just go in manually
with the blur tool? There was better than a 4 stop difference between
the subject and the sky.
processing ACR -> TIFF -> 0.5,100% USM -> save for web
ISO 200, 1/200 sec, f/5.6, 400 mm, manual exposure, 420EX flash

Nice shots woodmeister. I just got my 550EX. Need to practice over the weekend if it doesn't rain. You shoud look into something called "Better Beamer". It is approx $40 and extends the range of the flash so you use the flash more as a fill.

Nice shots Woodmeister. I use the DRebel and I also have the 420EX flash but so far I can only use it with the 18-55 lens that came with the camera. Up till now I haven't gotten much use out of it when using my 135-400 lens. I think I will look into the Better Beamer that Bobbyz suggested.
