Thanks Bobby, yes the sun was shinning nicely and the angle of the duck vs the sun was optimal I believe

Problem with snowy background, you have to meter things that the camera shows approx. +1 2/3 to the right of the meter. This way normally you have a good exposure on the subject as long as its not in the shades.
