Was he actually bellowing (sp?) or just exhaling?

Either way, nice picture. Great results for 1/40th of a second.

I kinda wish there were just a bit less grass in front of the animal. Some gives it context and adds to the feeling, but this blocks a bit more than I'd like of the animal.

He was bugling. His little harem was in a clearing between two clumps of brush and aspen trees. It was difficult to get a clean shot, without disturbing the animals and being safe. My idea of fun is not having a 600lb elk charge me during rut.

Good one, I got a chuckle from that line.

Excellent capture of an important moment in the life of a beautifulelk. I'll tell you, I sure appreciate these kinds of shots of elk rather than the other kind. It must have been a touch nippy there.
