Not a great image of a malecardinal, but I thought I'd compareup-sizing an image using the 5% method in PS CS and a cheep 70$Tamron 2x teleconverter.

Identical shooting conditions minutes apart, without TC image up-sized and cropped to same area as next image taken with the TC,levels and unsharpened same amount in both images.

same image taken with the 2x TC.

Lens used was the Canon EF 100-300 f4-f5.6 USM

I expected the Cheep TC to be worse, just did not expect it to be quite as bad.

Camera was tripod mounted, aperture F5.6 selected, Av mode, and both images manually focused.

Interesting experiment, huge difference too. Unfortunately the bottom one doesn't sharpen very well either so that's about as good as it gets. That would probably be a decent way to compare various converters.

The second picture is just blurred by movement. You have a steady tripod?

Yes tripod is steady, Manfrotto 3021 with a168 ball head.

But thanks to the 2x TCthe light is reduced by 2 stops.

With the lens set to f5.6 the first image was at 1//250 sec. The second with a 2 stop loss was at f5.6(effective light of F11) and at 1/50. So any movement in the subject would cause problems.

With the inexpensive lens and TC combination your fastest stop is at an effective F11. I'll try again next time the sun comes out and use a static subject. Kind of pointless though as the whole purpose of the TC is to try to get closer to small movingsubjects.
