I was criusing the woods yesterday and I heard this rustling sound in the
leaves. Looked and looked, then this guy hopped up on the stump. These
guys are just so cute!

20D, 100-400 @ 400, Av mode, ISO 400, f/6.3,1/250

The first spotting of him. Doing stretching exercises?

Then he sat up for a while. The first is the full frame, the second is the
tight crop. I'm not sure which I like better? Any comments?

At first I was going to say I liked the tight crop the best but the more I looked at them I believe now that I like the full frame the best. But all three are very good.

These are really pretty photos and the colors are extremely pastel-like, which gives the entire work a very pleasing lightness, which matches the very innocent and light nature of that cute little chipmunk.

If I had to choose between the tight crop or the more expanded version I would choose the expanded version because I like the texture of that fanned wood at the right so much that if it were mine (and I'd be very happy to have one like this) I would value it almost as much as the main subject.

Background is extremely light and ephemeral as well, tieing in nicely to the overall theme. This is definitely a keeper.

Thanks guys. I have mother nature to thank for the lighting. There was a front
moving in and the sun was filtered through a thick haze of high clouds. It
was a shame I didn't spot some other subjects when I had these conditions.

Nice photos woodmeister, theyARE cute creatures !! [excuse the ignorance, are they squirrels or chipmunks, I'm presuming chipmunks, due to the tiltle]

The 100-400 does the 20d justice, doesn't it ??
