I would have like a closer shot, but they wouldn't cooperate.

Nice pic moon gypsy.

Sometimes it is more important to get the colors right than to be closer and your picture is very nice in the color department. My favorite thing about these birds is listening to their calls.

Have you experimented with a more vertical crop on the photo to show more of the greenery and less of the sky.

Photography is an art and extremely subjective in every way, shape and form, and this is a great example of how subjective it can be. I actually like the horizontal crop on this one and love the photo in it's original form the best. I think that the 3 plants give it a great sense of depth and the background far off a great sense of perspective space. The bird is incidental to the overall force of this work IMO and as zoomn has said the colors add a dynamic to the photo that also stands out.

I like it best just the way you presented it MoonGypsy

I like the first shot as is as well. We, myself included, can get caught up in
focusing soley on the subject and forget that a shot with the environment
that the bird or critter is in can also create a quite pleasing photo, which you
have done here.

I agree! I like the top picture because of the environment. That being said I really hate these birds, and find them almost rediculous in photographing them correctly.

They're this nice thick black, and then that saturated color! Drives me nuts.
